Favorite Coming of Age/High School Films: All About Lily Chou-Chou/リリイ・シュシュのすべて/Rirī Shushu no Subete (2001)
Directed by: Shunji Iwai | Starring: Hayato Ichihara, Shugo Ishinari
All About Lily Chou-Chou follows a group of teenagers attempting to grow up amidst Japan’s pervasive cyber culture and negotiate teen badlands- school bullies, parents from another planet, lurid snapshots of sex and death. They seek sanctuary, even salvation, through pop star savior Lily Chou-Chou, embracing her sad, dreamy songs and sharing their fears and secrets in Lilyholic chat rooms. Immersed in the speed of everyday troubles, their lives inevitably climax in a fatal collision between real and virtual identities, a final logging-off from innocence. The film follows a non-linear structure and is a moody, melancholic and disturbingly real portrayal of youth in Japan. The music of fictional singer Lily Chou-Chou sets the mood for the film, which is a mix and sampling of music from classical music, particularly Claude Debussy, and modern electronic music.
I wanna be I wanna be I wanna be just like a melody
just like a simple sound like in harmony
I wanna be I wanna be I wanna be just like the sky
just fly so far away to another place
To be away from all, to be one of everything
I wanna be I wanna be I wanna be just like the wind
just flowing in the air through an open space
I wanna be I wanna be I wanna be just like the sky
just fly so far away to another place
I wanna be I wanna be I wanna be just like the sea
just swaying in the water so to be at ease
To be away from all, to be one, of everything
I wanna be I wanna be I wanna be just like a melody
just like a simple sound like in harmony
